Social Networks

August 11, 2008 at 11:56 am (Uncategorized)

We’re suppossed to write about a Ning that ccclib could find useful.  How about if ccclib created a ning?  I explored some Contra Costa nings, not many out there, and found that there is a lot of room for growth on this particular social network.  I first heard about ning from a web 2.0 class I took from Infopeople and joined a youth and teen 2.0 ning and hadn’t logged back on until this exercise.

I spend much more of my time networking on Facebook, followed by Linkedin, and then Myspace.  Although if you asked a year ago Myspace would have been first on the list.

RSS might just be that simple…

August 4, 2008 at 12:22 pm (Uncategorized)

I signed up for events at my library and then went and entered all my new storytimes for the upcoming session into e.vanced… you get the picture.

I liked this exercise, but like del.licio.us I am not sure I would actually use this in my daily life.  In part because I just don’t want to be that connected!  My husband loves this sort of thing, although he never reads a fraction of what he subscribes to.  I prefer to avoid the overload.  I think my favorite part of the assignment were the instructions for deleting.

I had a moment of confusion when I was swept away with bloglines beta and couldn’t get back to the regular site.  Otherwise, smooth sailing.

More on Meebo

July 30, 2008 at 3:39 pm (Uncategorized)

Used Meebo to communicate with one of our teen volunteers today.  It was great practice for the staff, and very educational.  Did you know that Pac Man eats pork? and is afraid of Ninjas?  Web 2.0 is a great way of connecting to teens, tweens, and kids.  They use it, contribute to it, and probably know more (or at least different things) about it.

That said Library uses for IM: chat reference!

Meebo..IM all in one place

July 25, 2008 at 10:30 am (Uncategorized)

I like the ability to have all my IM in one place.  Also adding the widget to pages is a fun tool I have been playing with since the peer trainers went through this exercise.  I missed my opportunity to chat with my fellow peer trainer online because I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea of using chat at work.  I kept staring at the widget in the corner at thinking “huh, that should mean something to me?”  So to all those who see the Meebo widget and wonder why?  Talk to it!  Say Hi! Type something!  Or maybe you’ll catch me online sometime as under my screename, which is wynnbliss of course.

Google docs suite how sweet it is…

July 21, 2008 at 1:07 pm (Uncategorized)

I would find Google docs a lot more handy if I wasn’t in a library of 40 computers with full office suites.  Please don’t throw things at me!  I do remember working at libraries less blessed with technology, and the ability to create a Google doc account and write a paper, upload, download, print, etc… genius.

For someone with an MLIS I am not this organized

July 14, 2008 at 10:45 am (Uncategorized)

OK I tried it, so that should count for something.  I guess I am really not that organized.  Sad really since I guess there are expectations that I should be given my degree.  😦

Don’t think social bookmarking was for me.  I almost never use favorites either.  I have a good memory and type pretty fast. 🙂

What does wynnbliss mean anyway????

July 9, 2008 at 12:56 pm (Uncategorized)

Curious? Think you know already, Chirstine?  So Mr. Besbol posted an up close pic of his tattoo on his blog so I felt that I should do the same, since mine is also related to my username.  Wynn is one the the spellings of the rune that is in the center of my tattoo and it means bliss, friendship, happiness, good social life, and is a rune of protection.

I didn’t forget to wiki, I just forgot to write about it

July 8, 2008 at 5:22 pm (Uncategorized)

I left for ALA without blogging about my post to the staff picks wiki.  I guess I am still not in the habit of blogging.  Please keep in mind that as a peer trainer I completed this before you, so my dates may be a little different than yours.  I am in the habit of adding to the wiki on a fairly regular basis under the name Aly.  You’ll see that name a lot in books for kids, but I also review for teens, adults, and an audio book here and there.  For this assignment I reviewed Pullman’s “Once upon a time in the North” http://staffpicks.pbwiki.com/Books+for+Teens

P.S. Wiki means quick. for those who are paying attention. :)-

Motivational web 2.0

June 24, 2008 at 6:21 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m thinking that I need to explore some of my own strategies for motivating the staff here at DSL and SRL.  Although it is only day two and many have completed their blogs, there is still a strong feeling of why?  And maybe a lack of chocolate?

For someone with a degree in writing I sure hate blank pages…

June 23, 2008 at 2:16 pm (Uncategorized)

Maybe hate is not the correct word.  Dread?  Alright.  I have nothing to write about.  Web 2.0 is like the ultimate vanity press.  Guess that’s why I see so many self-publishing adds on Facebook.  Which almost distracts me from turning my friends into vampires or werewolves, or sending them plants to save the rainforests.  You know what I pretty much never do online?  Blog.  I can see the uses for libraries and in practical ways, just not really the personal social ones.  Which is pretty strange coming from someone who used to write pretty much every day.

That is all I have for now.  Plus I have a freeway full of traffic to drive home with.  Which we all know is very inspiring.  Then I will use Web 2.0 in my personal life instead of for work.  🙂
